Is your vehicle winterized? Cold temperatures push vehicle performance making maintenance more important. Inspect the coolant (antifreeze) at least annually; coolant should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Change the engine oil regularly; usually every 3,000 miles or 3 months which ever occurs first. Inspect the battery and exhaust system. Inspect the heater and defroster for proper working order. Keep the gas tank at least half full. This will decrease the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Inspect the tire tread depth and tire pressure; improper inflation will rob your gas mileage and decrease tire performance. Inspect headlights and wiper blades.

Check the level, condition & concentration of the coolant as the weather warms up. Check fluids, hoses, and belts. Get a tune-up if necessary. As part of the 21st Century Tune-Up on today's modern vehicles, the following systems should be inspected: battery, charging and starting, engine mechanical, powertrain control (including onboard diagnostic checks), fuel, ignition and emissions. For the exterior, give your car a good washing from top to bottom. Use a product specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body, and don't use the same mitt for both. Spring is an excellent time for waxing, which not only protects the finish but also makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint.

Make sure your car is ready for summer vacation traveling. Remember to check all the fluids. The major system fluids that require attention include motor oil, engine coolant, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids, and windshield washer solvent. Heat can be extremely damaging to your car's operation. Tires are the most vulnerable to summer heat. You don’t want to see any bulges, bald spots or wear bars on the tires. These are major indicators that your tires should be replaced before an extended trip. Use a tire pressure gauge to check tire inflation. Under inflated tires will rob your gas mileage. Remember to inspect the belts, hoses and their clamps. Nothing is more frustrating that an unexpected breakdown due to a blown hose. Inspect the belts for cracks and dry rot. A failed belt can affect the vehicle’s cooling system, the power steering, the air conditioning and the electrical system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.
When the leaves change so should your tires. Inspect your tires, brakes, and wiper blades. Don't forget to check your spare and be sure the jack is in good condition.
